Back Flap Reconstruction (Ld Flap Breast Surgery)
Latissimus dorsi flap (LDF) is performed for reconstruction of a large variety of breast cancer surgery defects, including mastectomy.
Before
After
Back flap procedure:
- The latissimus dorsi muscle is in the back side, just below the shoulder and behind the armpit. Because it contains muscle, a latissimus dorsi flap is considered a muscle-transfer type of flap.
- An oval flap of skin, fat, muscle, and blood vessels from the upper back is used to reconstruct the impacted breast. This flap is moved under the skin around to the chest to rebuild the impacted breast.
- You should opt for this surgery if - There’s not enough donor tissue in your abdomen, you’ve had previous flaps that failed and need a secondary alternative.
- This surgery is a better option for women with small- to medium/small-sized breasts because there's usually not much fat on this part of the back.

Post-surgery and recovery
The skin on the back usually has a slightly different colour and texture than breast skin, however, latissimus dorsi flap breast reconstruction can still look natural.
After the surgery, the treated areas will probably be bruised
and swollen for a few weeks.
It can take up to 3-6 months for a Lipofilling surgery to fully take effect, as some of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by the body during the first few weeks after the procedure.
Some complications include - fever or feeling sick if these symptoms are not addressed immediately; in a few instances, the tissue moved from the back to the breast area won't get enough circulation and some of the tissue might die
